Homeschooling Methods

When I first begun my research into the whole homeschooling scene, I was totally confused about how to go about it. With my experience communicated with other parents who homeschool their childs as well as from readings available , I thought that the ‘traditional’ schooling method would be the best for me as I would have a set schedule and topics/ lessons to cover each day.  However, I came to realise that homeschooling is not always as clear-cut as this, especially when you have a home to keep in order too!

So, what are the different methods or philosophies?  Here’s a short list that I have googled:

  • Charlotte Mason Method:
Charlotte Mason developed a unique approach to education which focused on a literature based curriculum instead of textbooks and real-life applications.
  • Montessor Method:
According to Dr. Maria Montessori, learning is a natural, self-directed process which follows certain fundamental laws of nature. Her continual recommendation to parents and to teachers was to “Follow the Child.”
  • The Eclectic Homeschooler:
An Eclectic Homeschooler is one who looks at the different approaches and methods of homeschooling, at the “opinions and principles of each,” and takes from each approach and method for his family, forming his own unique philosophy.
  • Traditional or School-at-Home Method:
Traditional Homeschools would be set up public school style with a complete curriculum, traditional grading system and record keeping.
  • Unschooling or Natural Learning Method:
Unschooling or Natural Learning is a philosophy of child-led learning where you let your child lead the way. For more information on this method visit this site.
  • Unit Studies Approach:
The Unit Studies Approach integrates all school subjects together into one theme or topic.
  • Waldorf  Method:
Developed by Rudolf Steiner, this method emphasizes arts and crafts, music and movement. Students learn to read and write by making their own books.
